I never held much of a connection to the Judgement card when I was starting to read tarot. For me, it turned out to be a card that I had to experience for myself before I could truly appreciate its energy.
Every year, on New Year’s Day, I like to lay out a Celtic Cross spread for myself and have a look at what’s to come for the next 12 months.
Like any path, my way to tarot was long and winding. Even though I often read for friends and gave mini readings at parties, I never, ever had an inclination to read tarot in a professional capacity, let alone start my own tarot business.
I had always considered myself to be a writer, first and foremost. Ever since I was 13 years old, I knew I was going to be an author.
When January 1, 2015 rolled around, I wasn’t at all prepared for the reading that came through. In fact, I didn’t even believe it when I wrote it all down. (When I read for myself, I do a stream-of-consciousness writing session as a way to channel messages from the cards.) My own skepticism is funny to me now, because it was one of the clearest readings I have ever done for myself.
Judgement was the outcome card. Sometimes, tarot cards will follow us around for a long while, yet that was not a card I typically pulled, so it jumped out at me immediately. Right away, it gave me a very lucid message: “You will be called to a new, higher path this year. Get ready. It will happen fast.”
The reading also told me that it would be important for me to make sure I kept my head clear, and that I had a lot of time to myself so that I “could hear God speaking to me.”
Both messages left me fuddled. “I’m already on my path,” I later wrote down in my journal. “I am not getting on another one.”
I had my writing, after all. My fourth book was due out in a matter of months, and I also worked full-time in communications at a national charity.
New path? No thanks! Like a difficult client, I quickly dismissed my tarot reading, forgetting about it completely.
A couple of months went by when I had a dream where I walked into a field full of spiritual workers. In the dream, a woman walked right up to me and said, “You have to be here with us. You have to get on this path.”
The dream was so vivid. I knew it was significant. I wrote it down, but I didn’t connect it to my tarot reading at all, which I had still pushed out of my memory.
And then the Judgement card started to make its presence known. I’ve found that cards will do that – they will keep showing up if they feel ignored. This time, Judgement wasn’t even bothering to come up in my personal readings, but other people’s. One night, at a friend’s party, it showed up in eight out of ten readings I did for others.

Something told me that that card wasn’t there for the partygoers. It was there for me.
Still, I was stubborn. I wasn’t looking for change. I wasn’t looking for a new beginning. But all throughout early 2015, I kept getting asked for tarot readings. More and more opportunities were presenting themselves, and I didn’t even have a website advertising myself as a reader.
One night, on my way home from reading at an event, I said to myself, “I’m starting to feel like tarot is something I could actually do. That I need to do.” I started noticing other people’s tarot businesses and felt deep, unexpected longings to follow suit.
I didn’t decide to go pro right away, but I did decide to start blogging about tarot. On weekends, instead of working on my novel, I started asking more people if they wanted free readings.
I started doing even more parties. I started talking more openly about my own tarot practice, something I had kept very personal for a long time.
I was waking up to tarot in a whole new way, and that is what I always associate with the Judgement card. Its energy symbolizes an awakening, a rebirth.
And then, during a New Moon, I set an intention to one day start a tarot business.
A month later, I was laid off from my communications job. But I knew that this was also part of the shift I felt was coming. I had asked for self-employment, and now I had the opportunity to start a whole new career.
The day after I was let go, I was cleaning up at home, trying to figure out what to do first, when I picked up my old notebook. Guess what it fell open to? The pages with my New Year’s Day reading, with my Judgement messages.
This was the new path that I hadn’t seen coming at all back then. No longer was I afraid to shift my priorities from writing to tarot. No longer was I resisting change.
And that’s what I’ve always reminded myself about the Judgement card: Awakenings can come out of nowhere. You might not even know that you need them, especially if you’re caught up in old energy, old dreams, and old patterns, which I was.
I had been holding onto an idea of being an author for so long that I had never even given myself the chance to consider that pursuing something else, like tarot, could be equally – if not more – fulfilling for me.
Judgement helped me to see that I had moved onto a path of service, and I felt encouraged enough to embrace the unknown. Because Judgement has such a strong, spiritual presence, I felt fully supported by the universe, and knew that everything was unfolding as it was meant to.
